Does anyone else have the feeling that this election is about to turn really, really nasty? I’m getting the feeling that the accusations and lawsuits about meeting with the gambling capo are just the beginning. There is nothing like a high-stakes razor-close election to make people put aside all their scruples in pursuit of any tiny advantage. I hope I’m wrong, but I think the next seven weeks might be toxic.

The KMT is facing a genuine risk of losing the presidential elections, even if not the legislative elections. They still have a strong sway over the judicial branch, just as over the executive apparatus – an inheritance from the days when they were the only legal political party. They are still far from thinking of themselves as “just another political party”.
As for the pan-green camp on the other hand, there seems to be an inclination to see things black and white (them being the lily-white political camp, of course). I’m not surprised that things are getting “toxic” – more that they turned nasty relatively late in the course of the campaigns. I hope that constitutional damage can be avoided, and that the public will look at things with an interested, but laid-back, attitude.
