2012 legislative candidates, v.1

Enough of that silly policy talk.  Let’s get back to elections!

The KMT finished its first stage of the process, accepting applications for nonimations, on Friday.   The DPP finished this last week, but only for the districts they think they will win.  The “difficult” districts will have to wait for another day for the DPP’s field of candidates.  So here is the field right now.  Maybe when I have more energy, I’ll put in names and discuss individual people.  (Romanization strikes again: I could zip out the Pinyin for all these people in a few minutes, but looking up each one individually is going to take some time.  So my effort to use more common spellings has a price, dammit.  Curse you, romanization!)

    Allo Garlic:
段宜康 & 陳其邁 have announce their withdrawals from the nomination process, also there are rumours that the DPP intend to recruit talk show critics for Danshui & Fengyuan, the name in which I don’t remember unfortunately. It seems like Yang & Du, if you know who I refers to, will be nominated for Miaoli 1 & 2.

  2. frozengarlic Says:

Rust, there are several candidates who have already dropped out, but I didn’t have the energy to hunt down all those news stories too. (This would have been a lot easier if the KMT had put out a press release, the way the DPP did, with all of the people who registered. Instead I had to sift through all the local news reports.) What I’m trying to do is to put together a list of everyone who is interested in running. Of course, there are lots of people who decided not to register, but this is a convenient break point. We’ll eventually get all the people who withdraw (because they won’t be included in the final telephone surveys), and we’ll eventually learn who will run for the DPP in the other districts.

I don’t know which Yang you are referring to. I assume Du is Du Wen-ching, the former legislator.

    Other rumors are welcome.

    • Rust Says:

      Allo Garlic:
Yang refers to 楊長鎮, the last County Executive DPP nominee, whom romanization I have no idea how to spell. Sadly I can’t provide you with any kmt info, cause I only care to look up the DPP news. (Maybe I shouldn’t say that, now everyone know my partisan stand!)

Hi Garlic it me again XD, hope my constant posting isn’t annoying to ppl.

    – 林右昌 seems to be up for Jilong – http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/110321/128/2oe4p.html

    – 林樹山 is out, so 劉建國 for Yunlin 2 – http://libertytimes.com.tw/2011/new/mar/21/today-p1.htm

    – 段宜康 out, soutce – http://tw.news.yahoo.com/article/url/d/a/110320/78/2ocxv.html

    Hope this help.

  4. frozengarlic Says:

Thanks. I hadn’t seen the news about 林樹山。 Some other withdrawals I have seen include 何欣純 in Taichung 7 and 林國慶 in Chiayi 2. Also, I have seen reports that say the DPP is considering 湯曜 in Penghu; 陳進丁 (didn’t know he had joined DPP)、江昭儀、魏明谷 in Changhua 1, 2, and 4, respectively. 羅致政 wants to run in Xinbei 7, and 游盈隆 and 莊碩漢 want to run in Xinbei 10. There are a few other districts that the DPP should have a chance of winning that I haven’t seen any proposed candidacies for including Xinbei 1, Xinbei 7, Taoyuan 4, Taichung 3, Taichung 8, Yunlin 1, Chiayi City, Chiayi County 1, and Kaoshiung 3.

  5. Rust Says:

Taichung 6 – Central: 何敏豪 withdrawn, leaving 張溫鷹 & 林佳龍… on a side note I don’t like 張溫鷹, as she in my opinion caused the DPP the Taichung Mayorship by running as an independent, taking away just enough vote for the Kmt to win.

    Taichung 4 – Xitun-Nantun: 陳淑華 withdrawn, leaving 張廖萬堅、何文海 & 羅正方.

The Taichung & Kaohsiung nomination process seems to be going well for the DPP, with lot of candidates persuaded to withdrawn. Tainan was bloody though.

  6. frozengarlic Says:

I doubt Chang caused Hu to win in 2001. The result was Hu 49.1, Tsai 40.8, and Chang 10.1. If Chang hadn’t run and every single person who had voted for Chang instead voted for Tsai, then yes, Tsai would have won. But that is highly improbable. Remember, those 10% chose not to vote for Tsai, even though they almost all must have known that Chang had very little chance of winning.

Chang won the 1997 race because she was able to reach across the partisan divide and steal some votes from the other KMT faction. She always had some support that was loyal to her personally but leaned more to the KMT in national politics. Those 10% are most likely those people. We have never seen much evidence that the DPP can get to 50% in Taichung City.

So you are welcome to dislike her, but you’ll have to find a new reason.

  7. Rust Says:

    Allo Garlic:
I agree with your analysis, it quite unlikely that Tsai could have absorbed all of Chang’s votes. I will continue to dislike her thought for running independently XD.
Btw, considering this history, do you think she have a realistic chance in this nomination contest against Lin? I think Lin does have quite some support there, but I have no evidence to back that statement. Chang did ran independently too, something that I don’t think will sit well with DPP supporters. Or could she just be there waiting for the party to grant her some “incentives” in exchange for withdrawing? (Sounds like something prevalent in leadership elections in Canada XD)
